Your Capitol Theatre

A Message from the Capitol Theatre Team

The Capitol Theatre stands as the premier performing arts venue in Central Washington - the artistic heart of the Yakima Valley and home to three vibrant nonprofit organizations that bring a diverse array of performances and events to our community. As the region's largest and most technically capable stage, the Capitol Theatre plays a vital role in enriching lives, inspiring creativity, and driving cultural and economic vitality.

To preserve this legacy and ensure it meets the evolving needs of both artists and audiences, the Capitol Theatre must undergo a series of essential upgrades. These improvements will address aging infrastructure and modernize the facility to meet the technical expectations of world-class performances, enhance audience comfort, and provide an exceptional experience for generations to come. Please join with us to restore Yakima's Jewel.

Sincerely,
Charlie Robin, CEO and Sierra Hutton, Development Director

"The Capitol Theatre stands in Yakima as a monument to a prosperous and inspired past.  Remarkably, this theatre thrives today as the rare artifact that enjoys continuous use as a hub of culture and the arts in Yakima. The drive to invest in the preservation and modernization of this asset reflects the same hopes and dreams for the community that our ancestors had on the first opening night May 5, 1920. Please join us as we reach our goals!" - Susie Temple, Capital Campaign Committee Chair

Frequently Asked Questions

The Your Capitol Theatre Campaign is a community effort to invest in the future of the Capitol Theatre. Through critical facility improvements and modernization projects, the campaign will preserve this historic landmark while ensuring it continues to serve audiences, artists, students, and community organizations for generations to come.

The Capitol Theatre suffered a devastating fire in 1975. It reopened to the public in 1978 and in the intervening decades has been in continuous use as a performing arts center. A major update occurred in 2011 with the addition of the Production Center and the 4th Street Theatre, but the historic Capitol Theatre has not had a major renovation in 50 years. Many of the Theatre's systems and facilities are aging and require significant updates. These improvements will address infrastructure needs, but also enhance audience comfort and accessibility, and provide the technical capabilities required by today's performers and touring productions.

The Capitol Theatre and 4th Street Theatre will both be fully open and accessible for the 2026 - 2027 season. Construction will begin in the historic Capitol Theatre in June of 2027, at which time that venue will be dark through the summer of 2028. Throughout the 2027-2028 season, the 4th Street Theatre will continue to operate providing a venue for a wide array of distinct performances and events. The historic Capitol Theatre will reopen in November of 2028 - marking 50 years after the first grand reopening in November 1978.
