Even before it starts, the 2025-2026 Capitol Best Series stirs up a great deal of excitement.
The season’s first offerings are preview performances in Yakima before the shows premiere in Seattle. As it has for years, the Capitol Theatre supports touring productions kicking off their tours on the west coast. Broadway producers pull together all of the pieces in Yakima, and we get first peeks at the final product before it premieres elsewhere.
This is extraordinary for Yakima, especially for the first show of the Best series, because it means we see the first-ever tour of a brand-new musical which this time last year won Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score of a Musical on Broadway.
Our first show, Suffs, shares the story of the brilliant, passionate, and funny American women who fought tirelessly for the right to vote – the Suffragettes. This “thrilling, inspiring and dazzlingly entertaining” (Variety) new musical boldly explores the triumphs and failures of a struggle for equality that’s far from over. Above all, this show celebrates one thing…behind every powerful woman…are more powerful women.
Following on their heels (see what I did there?) is a return of an all-time favorite, Chicago.
A universal tale of fame, fortune, and all that jazz, with one show stopping song after another, Chicago comes from the genius of the iconic Bob Fosse and the creative team behind some of Broadway’s theatrical classics, the songwriting duo of John Kander & Fred Ebb. It holds the distinction of the being the longest-running American musical in Broadway history and the longest-running musical revival ever.
Celebrating its 30th Anniversary of touring, STOMP will also refresh its production in Yakima before starting this year’s tour. Known to be explosive, inventive, provocative, witty, and utterly unique, STOMP is an unforgettable experience for all ages. Since the original production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the 1990s, it has become an international sensation, garnering an armful of awards and rave reviews around the globe.
The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, hubcaps, innertubes – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The energy with lift you out of your seats.
Finishing off the Capitol Best series is another Edinburgh Fringe Festival find. Choir of Man offers up 80 minutes of indisputable joy for all ages. It’s a party and a concert, with a real working bar on stage. A multi-talented cast of nine guys combines hair-raising harmonies, foot-stomping singalongs, world-class tap dance, and poetic meditations on the power of community paying homage to that favorite of Irish or British gathering places: the local pub.
A surprise addition to this year’s offerings, and news for our subscribers as well, we have a last-minute addition to the series. Capitol patrons will enjoy a return engagement of Kinky Boots in December. As subscription processing was already underway, this will be treated as an add-on option.
Kinky Boots, based on a true story, features Tony® and Grammy®-winning music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a hilarious and life-affirming book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Charlie Price is failing at holding together the family shoe factory he inherited, until he meets Lola, a drag queen whose sparkle and unsteady heels might just hold the answer to saving the struggling business. This story will Raise You Up as it celebrates everyone’s individuality.
By the varieties of the many things that determine touring schedules, the Capitol Best Series finishes by the beginning of January. Not to worry, by the fall the Capitol Theatre will announce a collection of single performance events that will begin in December and carry us through the spring.
We process subscription renewals in June, and new subscription sales start in July. Check out the Capitol Theatre website (www.capitoltheatre.org) for additional details on dates, times, and all the information you need in order to secure the Best seats for the Best shows.
