Job Description:
The Capitol Theatre is always looking to add Stage Technicians to our call list. Stage Technicians are called on an ‘as-needed’ basis for staffing large productions throughout the season and are not guaranteed regular work.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Stage Technician is responsible for all backstage stage activates in the Capitol and 4th Street theatre. They are essential to creating and running all theatrical productions. Stage Technicians are expected to do their jobs unseen by the audience, and provide the “magic” of theater.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports to the CTC Assistant Technical Director. This position also works closely in collaboration with the CTC Crew Chief and CTC Technical Director. This position often works under the guidance of outside touring crews and renters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
(The essential functions listed below do not reflect all duties that may be assigned to this position. The Technical Director may augment duties, including essential functions, at their discretion.)
- Unloads and loads scenery and equipment into trucks and trailers.
- Unboxes, sets up and tears down scenery and equipment.
- Hangs and focuses lighting equipment.
- Sets up and strikes audio/video equipment.
- Moves scenery and props before, during, and after performances.
- Cleans and repairs costumes.
- Full fills the required technical roles of a tour during performances. These positions include but are not limited to: Deck Hand, Props, Light Board Operator, Follow Spot Operator, Sound Board Operator, Show Runner, Dresser, Laundry, etc.
- Cleans and maintains CTC equipment.
- Cleans and maintains CTC facilities.
- May be called upon to travel and/or perform duties at another offsite location.
- Performs under the Working Conditions described below.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY:
ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Must be able to operate effectively within a group.
- Must be punctual and reliable with an attention to detail.
- Must be willing to learn new concepts and follow verbal instructions.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Safe working practices and industry standards.
- Accepted production practices of performers, technicians, and company personnel.
- Standard theatrical fly systems.
- Basic theatrical carpentry skills.
- Basic theatrical stage rigging.
- Basic theatrical lighting.
- Basic theatrical audio/video.
ABILITY TO:
- Work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Effectively complete daily tasks.
- Communicate verbally to others.
EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION/LICENSES, AND TRAINING:
- None required.
- Previous experience in a theatre environment preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Regular works in a “Theatre Environment” including standing for extended periods and working in low-light situations.
- Hours will vary depending on the number of events in the season and needs of each event.
- Frequently works nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Frequently works mandatory overtime.
- Regularly works under tight time constraints.
- Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts up to and over 100 pounds.
