Stage Manager


The Stage Manager position provides leadership and training for the technical crew of performances in the Capitol and 4th Street Theatres. The Stage Manager also acts as a Capitol Theatre Committee (CTC) liaison with touring crews and renters of these facilities.



This position reports to the CTC Technical Director. This position works closely in collaboration with the CTC House Manager and with outside touring crews and renters. This position oversees all CTC carpenters, riggers, fly rail operators, props people, wardrobe assistants, and truck loaders.



The Department Head positions are expected to be hands on leaders in their areas of expertise and model the manner and quality of service CTC expects of all of its staff. These positions are “working heads” and are expected to fill the various roles of stage technicians while accomplishing their other duties. As part of a leadership team, the Department Heads work together to oversee all stage technicians in the facility, not only the ones in their departments. Department Heads are expected to teach good work habits and basic stage craft alongside training specific stage technicians in the more detailed aspects of their departments.  



The Department Head positions are 10 month appointments, starting in September and running through the end of June. Depending on the summer months’ schedules, the appointment can be extended through the end of August at the discretion of the CTC Technical Director. There are no term limits on appointments, and any Department Head can re-apply for the position the following season.


Due to the nature of scheduling the use of rental facilities, there is no set number of hours per week for these positions. Though no guarantees are made, it is expected that the Department Head positions will average 20 hours per week during the season. To help ensure this, Department Heads are given the right of first refusal on all work shifts in their departments up to a max of 40 hours per week. Department Heads may work more than 40 hours per week, but loose the right of first refusal on shifts once they have worked 40 hours.

  1. Lead the technical crew in all aspects of set-up, tear-down, and running of shows in the Capitol and 4th Street Theatres.
  2. Fill in for any vacant technical position in their department with little to no notice.
  3. Create and submit show reports to the Technical Director.
  4. Maintain and update equipment inventory lists.
  5. Assist the Technical Director in maintaining equipment and facilities.
  6. Advise the Technical Director on equipment upgrades and improvements.
  7. Train new crew members in the practices and policies of their department to the minimum CTC standard level.
  8. Address clients’ questions, complaints, and concerns.
  9. Attend technical department meetings, and facility rental meetings as required.
  10. Review touring show technical riders, and provide equipment rental estimates.
  11. Perform under the Working Conditions described below.

  4. Basic theatrical carpentry skills.
  5. Basic theatrical stage rigging.



  1. Work under minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  2. Plan, organize, and complete daily tasks and achieve longer term goals.
  3. Gather and evaluate information and communicate it to others effectively both verbally and in writing.



  1. Minimum 5 years of experience in one of the following fields: Stage Management, Carpentry, or Theatrical Rigging.
  2. College degree preferred.
  3. Project management experience preferred.



  1. Regularly work in a “theatre environment” including standing for extended periods and working in low-light situations.
  2. Hours will vary depending on the number of events in the season and needs of each event.
  3. Frequently work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  4. Frequently work mandatory overtime.
  5. Regularly work under tight time constraints.
  6. Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to and over 100 pounds.
